Who is Dorian Winter?

Hello, I’m Dorian.

​

I’m a provisional psychologist, aspiring researcher, artist, editor, and writer based in Perth, Western Australia. My interests tend to gather around people and the worlds they inhabit: identity, stigma, mental health, neurodivergence, culture, and the ways our environments shape how we understand ourselves.

​

I am currently completing a Master of Professional Psychology at the University of Western Australia, following a Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) in Psychology. Alongside my training as a provisional psychologist, I work casually as a university tutor and remain involved in research and publication. 

​

My developing research and clinical interests centre on stigma, LGBTQIA+ and adolescent mental health, neurodivergence, and culturally responsive psychology. My Honours research explored anticipated stigma, social support, and emotional wellbeing among transgender and gender-diverse young people. I am particularly interested in what sits beneath mental health disparities: how stigma becomes psychologically meaningful, how social and cultural contexts can intensify or interrupt it, and how research might translate into interventions that are actually useful to the communities they concern.​

Alongside all of this, I continue to write.

​

In 2023, I founded Antler Velvet, an independent literary and arts journal that I continue to lead as Editor-in-Chief and Artistic Director. It has grown into an international creative platform spanning literature, visual art, and cultural commentary, and remains one of the places where my interests in communication, aesthetics, and people converge most naturally. I have also worked as Visual Arts Sub-Editor for Pelican Magazine and remain active within Perth’s independent writing and publishing community.

My poetry and creative work have appeared in ARTERY, Pelican, Fifth Wheel Press, Meniscus, Pulch Magazine, and Licorice Zine, among others. I tend to return to liminality, queerness, perception, memory, and the sensory textures through which people construct a life. Mostly, I am interested in the strange borderlands between observation and interpretation - the inbetween.
